Moravskoslezska vedecka (Ostrava Library)

The Moravian-Silesian Research Library in Ostrava is regional library located in city Ostrava (300.000 inhabitants) in the eastern part of the Czech Republic. Besides traditional library functions, it is engaged in organisation of educational activities on a long-term basis. These activities are destined for librarians of the Moravian-Silesian Region, as well as for wide public. Also the high school students are in its spotlight – the library offers them educational presentations about e-book, citation ethics, regional history or development of writing and book. Among activities for users after working years, the library organizes lectures on environmental of historic topics. Some activities are trained by library staff, for topics outside librarianship, external lectors are hired.

The MoravianSilesian Research Library in Ostrava has own digitization workplace and has experience with creating and presenting digital versions of texts and documents, especially from regional sphere. Purchased commercial and acquired free-access e-books are to be found among its collections too. The library has approximately 110 thousand physical and 600 thousand virtual visitors, who borrow 415.000 loans per year. The own digitization workplace has produced and presents over 1720 books and 120 periodicals online, will annual increment of about 32 thousand pages in 2018. Besides purchased e-source collections, the library has gather and presents over 10 thousand Czech free and paid e-books in its catalogue, with annual increment of about 4000 of them in 2018. The total number of employees is 73.
